Today marks our last day of school for 2024! We had a week filled with festive fun, dressing up to celebrate the season, welcoming our community into the building for concerts, and working through holiday-themed lessons.
Salem CSD will be on Holiday Break until Monday, January 6th, which will be our first day back. When we return, all district, school, grade level, and classroom communications will be sent through ParentSquare. Our current communication systems SchoolMessenger, Apptegy, and Thrillshare Rooms will be phased out on that date.
You should have received an initial email or text message from ParentSquare inviting you to join. For more information on how to set up your ParentSquare account, please visit: https://www.salemcsd.org/page/about-parentsquare
Wishing everyone a restful break and a Happy New Year!
Join Salem CSD for a morning of holiday cheer at our annual Holiday Review on Friday, December 20th at the Salem Washington Academy. The community is invited to join students as they perform festive holiday songs. The celebrations will kick off at 9:00 AM. We look forward to sharing the holiday spirit with you, see you there!

In our Physics classes, students have been applying the concepts of force and momentum through the Egg Drop challenge! Watch the video here: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1B7f1DtnVh/
Students were tasked with designing a landing craft to protect an egg during its fall from the top of a ladder. Using balloons, cardboard, tape, straws, cotton balls, and other household items, students utilized their understanding of physics to create a safe landing for their eggs.
Over the past few years, students and families from Salem CSD have supported the Ronald McDonald House Charities program through the annual READ fundraiser. We're excited to announce that the fundraiser is returning and will begin after the holiday break!
The local Ronald McDonald House provides essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing when children need healthcare. This vital work is made possible through donations and volunteers, who assist families facing a medical crisis.
The fundraiser will run for four weeks, from Wednesday, January 8th to Wednesday, February 5th. During this time, Salem CSD students are invited to participate by simply reading! Here’s how it works: students can ask friends, family, and community members to pledge a certain amount for the time they spend reading throughout the fundraiser. Each day, students will track their reading time and collect pledges based on their total at the end of the month.
Last year, 23 students from our district participated and raised $3,195 for families in need! Learn more about how you can contribute and get involved here: https://give.rmhcofalbany.org/team/610750
Take a peek at some of the creations from our 3rd and 4th grade Lego Club! Our young builders are not only having a blast but also strengthening their problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills as they tackle design challenges. From wild inventions to clever solutions, Lego Club is all about creativity, collaboration, and, most importantly… FUN!
Two of our students have recently been recognized for their leadership abilities and commitment to service. Charlotte Rishell was selected as our HOBY ambassador, and Anna Maxwell was chosen for the DAR Good Citizen Award!
Charlotte was selected from the sophomore class to represent Salem Central School at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar this spring. The purpose of this seminar is to bring together a select group of high school sophomores who have demonstrated leadership abilities within their school and community to further develop their talents. This program is sponsored by the Salem Area Women's Club.
Anna was named the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award for her dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The DAR Good Citizens Program aims to encourage and recognize the qualities of good citizenship. Each year, the staff and students at Salem Central School vote to select a senior who embodies these qualities.
Congratulations to both Charlotte and Anna! We are proud to be represented by you!
Over the weekend, our school hosted the Section 2 NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Freestyle Tournament. This tournament, a new sports offering in New York State, marked the first time Section 2 has provided this opportunity to student-athletes. We were joined by over 100 girls from 12 teams for a day of fierce competition. Thank you to everyone who came together to make this event possible and give our student-athletes the chance to showcase their skills!
Every Salem/Cambridge Wrestling girl who competed won at least one match—keep up the hard work!
Thank you to everyone who came out to see Salem High School's Drama Club performance of Groundhog Day: The Musical this past weekend! The musical numbers added a fun twist to the classic story. We are so proud of our talented students!

Last week during a traditional tapping ceremony, seven students from Salem CSD were inducted into the National Honor Society in front of friends and family. The National Honor Society recognizes students for their success in four areas: academic achievement, leadership, service, and character.
Congratulations to the inductees, Gavin Eastman, John Getty, Oliver Hickland, Trudy Keith, Jenna McCauliffe, Cooper Saddlemire, and Breanna Vincent! Read more about the ceremony here: https://shorturl.at/cG6O2
Salem CSD sent nine student musicians to participate in the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival in Lake George! The students didn't receive their sheet music until they arrived at the festival, but they rose to the challenge and performed these pieces in front of an audience. Great job, everyone!
Congratulations to Mr. Talmadge’s 3rd grade class and Ms. Frolish’s 2nd grade class for winning the “Golden Garbage Can” award for their cleanliness in October! The Golden Garbage Can serves as a fun tool to remind students to be mindful of the messes they leave behind, and motivates them to keep a clean classroom. Each month, two classes are recognized—one from PreK-2nd grade and one from 3rd-6th grade—and they are awarded the Golden Garbage Can to display in their classrooms for the following month.
Our custodial team selects winners based on the cleanliness of the classroom. We thank our students for doing their part to help maintain our beautiful and historic school building! Who will win in November?
Congratulations Mandi Ridler! She was selected as Washington County's Favorite Teacher! #salempride @Ms_AdamsSWA
We are excited to welcome Healthy Smiles Dental Clinic back to Salem School this year for two on-site dental cleanings—one in December and another in June. This service makes it more convenient for parents and students by minimizing the time spent away from work and school.
Last week, students in PreK through 5th grade had a visit from Emma, a dental hygienist, who shared valuable information about dental health and how to protect their teeth. She taught them about the structure of teeth and how the different parts of our mouths work together. After the presentation, all elementary students received a list of tips for avoiding cavities and other dental issues, as well as a yellow parental consent form which gives the option to enroll. The pk1-grade 5 class with the most returned yellow forms will win a healthy snacks party!
Please return the completed consent forms with your child to sign them up for the clinic. High school parents were emailed these forms, and high school students will receive a paper copy in gym class which can be filled out and returned to the high school office.
