During a traditional tapping ceremony, seven students from Salem CSD were inducted into the National Honor Society in front of friends and family. The National Honor Society recognizes students for their success in four areas: academic achievement, leadership, service, and character.
The inductees, Gavin Eastman, John Getty, Oliver Hickland, Trudy Keith, Jenna McCauliffe, Cooper Saddlemire, and Breanna Vincent, were welcomed into the organization by twelve Salem Washington Academy seniors who were selected for membership in the previous year.
“Participation in the NHS helps students to develop the qualities of leaders that will open doors in the future. Members of the National Honor Society are able to apply for their exclusive scholarships to support their post-graduate plans,” Julie Adams, Salem CSD Superintendent.
To be considered for membership, students must maintain an average GPA of 87.5% or higher, participate in school extracurricular activities, demonstrate a commitment to community service, and submit an essay expressing their interest to the school staff. Candidates are then evaluated by the staff based on their leadership, character, and service qualities.
“Being inducted into the National Honor Society is not only an accomplishment but also an opportunity for students to take on challenging responsibilities and make a difference in the community. With membership comes the recognition from peers and community members that they will uphold the values of the NHS,” said William Moore, Principal of Salem Jr/Sr High School.
One of the oldest and most recognizable student organizations, the National Honor Society at Salem CSD selects new members each year. The group is advised by two teachers, Mrs. Carol McPhee and Mrs. Vicki Perkins.
