Salem Central Nominates Members of the Class of 2016 to Receive Awards

            Salem Central School is pleased to announce the following awards given to members of the Class of 2016.  The Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award (sponsored by the University of Rochester)  is given to the member of the junior class with the highest achievement in science and high math scores on the PSAT or SAT.  This year’s nominee is Anna Fronhofer.  Anna will be offered a fee-waived application for admission to the University of Rochester.  Upon completion of the application, Anna will be considered a candidate for the Bausch and Lomb Science Scholarship, which has a four-year total to be determined by the University of Rochester.   Anna is also this year’s Rensselaer Medalist selection.  The Rensselaer medal has been awarded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for more than 95 years.  This award is given to a student in the top 10% of his/her class who has the highest math and science average.  Each nominee will receive a certificate and the medal is awarded at an open house to students that have chosen to apply to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and have been accepted. Each accepted medalist will receive a minimum of $15,000 and it is guaranteed for four years.

Anna also has been nominated for the Student Sage Award.  Anna was nominated for this award based on her academic performance, motivation and strong leadership skills.  She will receive a certificate from the Sage College, the Student Sage pin and the opportunity to compete for a scholarship at the Sage College of Albany if she chooses to apply. The Sage Award is given to a student that is not just academically talented but one that leads by example. Anna is the daughter of Socrates and Karen Fronhofer of Salem.

The George Eastman Young Leaders Award (sponsored by The Eastman Kodak Company and the University of Rochester) – A junior is nominated for this award based on strong leadership skills, grade point averages combined with challenging course loads, and extracurricular activities.  This year’s nominee is Remi LeBlanc.  Remi will be invited to apply to the University of Rochester with a fee-waived application.  Upon completion of the application process, Remi will be considered an applicant for the George Eastman Young Leaders Scholarship, which provides each qualified student a 4-yr scholarship toward tuition at the University of Rochester.  Remi is the son of Rolland and Wendy LeBlanc of Salem.

            The Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award (sponsored by the University of Rochester) - This award is given to a junior with the highest average in English and social studies.  This year’s nominee is Nicholas Holmes.  Nicholas is also invited to apply to the University of Rochester with a fee-waived application.  If he chooses to apply, he will be considered for the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Scholarship which is a renewable 4-yr scholarship. Nicholas is also the recipient of a Student Sage Award (sponsored by the Sage Colleges) – This award is given to a student who embodies the Sage motto: “To Be, To Know, To do.” This award was given to Nicholas based on his dedication to academic excellence, community service and intellectual debate.  Nicholas will receive a certificate, the Student Sage pin and the opportunity to compete for a scholarship.  Nicholas is the son of Donna Holmes of Salem and John Holmes also of Salem.

            The Wells College 21st Century Leadership Award (sponsored by Wells College) –  This award is designed to honor students who embody the spirit, integrity and intellectual qualities of strong leaders and it awards selected students a $40,000 Scholarship for Leaders ($10,000 per year) for four years of study at Wells.  Students must have a 90%+ gpa and demonstrate leadership ability through school and community activities.  This year’s nominee is Amelia Trybendis.
